The Adversary is a punching dummy that serves as one of the Training Hall's primitive training mechanisms.
Description
This deceptively simple training device is the first to be faced by any student entering the sacred Training Hall. Filled with sand from the upper deserts, it absorbs the punishing blows of any opponent and returns it tenfold. Caution is urged for the unfortunate unwary.[1]
The Adversary's appearance seems to be that of an unknown animal wearing a mask, possibly meant to resemble a bandit.
Shifu notes in the first film that the dummy is used for training children and to prop the entrance doors open when it's hot in the Hall.[2] It is still often used by children[3] (and occasionally Po).
History
In Kung Fu Panda

Po chose to face the Adversary during his first day in the Training Hall, trying to avoid the much more dangerous mechanisms. Shifu instructed Po to hit the dummy, but his first hit was far too soft. On Shifu's urging, Po hit it much harder, causing it to swing back and hit him in the face, knocking out a tooth and sending him flying into the training course.
In Secrets of the Furious Five
Another Adversary was painted in the likeness of Po and was seen being used by the rabbit children.
In Art of Balance
A training dummy similar to the Adversary was used on a rope when Po was training, which was painted to look like a lady bunny.
In Legends of Awesomeness
The Adversary has been used by Shifu on numerous occasions to demonstrate various kung fu moves, like the Chao Wa Punch Kick.[4]
