Beginnings

OogwayFenghuang

Fenghuang being mentored by Oogway

Though it is unknown of how she first came to be so, Fenghuang was once one of Oogway's students at the Jade Palace as part of the former Furious Five. Oogway had recognized special skills within Fenghuang, which he then refined in his mentoring sessions with her. As she trained, she gradually grew strong and stronger until she was the most powerful of the Five. It was most likely this recognition that caused her heart to grow dark and change.

Oogway-vs-Fenghuang

Fenghuang fighting Oogway

One day, Fenghuang approached Oogway and challenged him to a fight, believing to be more powerful than him and that she deserved to be the new master of the Jade Palace. Oogway had anticipated this (having built an inescapable owl-shaped cage just for her), but he still had to fight and defeat her in order to get her inside it. After a long and almost evenly-matched battle, Fenghuang found that she couldn't defeat Oogway. But before Oogway could do anything else with her, she fled away from the palace.

A rumor eventually sparked that she had made refuge in the Northern Mountains, too afraid of Oogway to return.

One day, Po's unexpected use of one of the Seven Impossible Moves during a battle unnerves Shifu and the Five. When Po enquires why they are so afraid, Master Shifu takes him to the library shows him a picture of one of the past Furious Fives. Fenghuang has a big X over her. After hearing of her past, Po begins to fear that he will become evil himself and during a talk with Monkey about her he learns that there has been a rumor that she has been hiding out in the Northern Mountains.

Po eventually leaves the Valley of Peace in order to protect his friends, travelling into the mountains. When he nearly falls to his death, Fenghuang unexpectedly appears, grabs him and carries him to her lair. She correctly guesses that he's from the Jade Palace from the scent of an incense she disliked. Recognising her, Po asks the owl what it's like being evil. This gets Fenghuang curious and she asks Po if Oogway told him about that. However, Po admits that Shifu told him and mistakenly tells her that Oogway is dead. This news excites Fenghuang, knowing that with Oogway out of the way, nothing can stop her from conquering the Valley of Peace. She attempts to entice Po to join her but the Dragon Warrior refuses and they fight for a while, but Fenghuang had the advantage in flight and cheating, and left Po in her lair, promising that he'll eventually come around to her way of thinking.

Returning to the Jade Palace, she first confronts Shifu, who had anticipated her return (and even lit some incense), and defeats him, along with the Furious Five as they battle her. Just as she has Shifu at her mercy, Po comes crashing in on a hang-glider made out of Fenghaung's feathers (collected from her lair). As they fight, Fenghuang asks Po why would he fight for friends who want him gone. Po refused to listen to her and tried using the Thundering Wind Hammer technique but she demonstrates how to deflect. Once again, Fenghuang tries to sway Po to the path of evil and shows him the Mongolian Fireball, another of the Seven Impossible Moves, which apparently succeeds in turning Po evil. Triumphant, Fenghuang orders Po to kill Shifu, to which he stabs him with a knife. While put off guard in her supposed triumph, Po suddenly traps Fenghuang in the owl cage Oogway had designed for her- he had only been pretending to be evil and had stabbed Shifu with a joke knife. She is then towed away to Chorh-Gom Prison by some pigs, but swears that she'd have her revenge.

Personality

FenghuangEyes

Fenghuang was once a diligent student in the art of Kung Fu, beholding natural talent that enabled her to quickly grasp the teachings of martial arts, both physical and spiritual. It was this devotion and talent that prompted Oogway into mentoring the owl personally, until she blossomed as the most powerful member of the Furious Five of her generation.

This caused Fenghuang's heart to turn dark, believing that as the strongest she deserved to rule, leading to her corruption. She has a cowardly side, as she was too afraid to face Oogway a second time after he defeated her; she only returned for a second attempt of takeover after learning that Oogway was deceased, and she is a self-admitting cheater. Fenghuang presumably saw Po as a potential disciple, and tried to seduce him into joining her with promises of power and glory and teaching him advanced kung fu techniques.

Fighting Style

FenghuangBlades

Fenghuang demonstrates a swift and graceful fighting style, some of which involved the use of several secret Kung Fu techniques to overpower her opponents, such as the Thundering Wind Hammer and the Mongolian Fireball. She has even claimed she could teach Po all the Seven Impossible Moves. She also utilizes the sharp blades on the tips of her wing feathers, sharp enough to cut cleanly through hard rock.

Another testament to her strength is that during her time at the Jade Palace, she was able to put up a decent against Master Oogway, who was regarded as the greatest Kung Fu Master ever.

Relationships

Oogway

Fenghuang was once a protégée of Oogway, who mentored the owl to become a most powerful warrior. But Fenghuang let the praise, skill and power go to her head, corrupting her into desiring to rule the Jade Palace. Oogway had suspected Fenghuang's fall from grace, having prepared an inescapable cage for her. After he defeated her, Fenghuang fled the Jade Palace, too afraid to face Oogway again.

The former Furious Five

FuriousFiveFenghuang

Though it is unknown what exact kind of relationship Fenghuang had with her former comrades, she was claimed to be the most skilled fighter out of them all.

Shifu

Once, Fenghuang and Shifu were members of their generation of the Furious Five, and they may have been friends and comrades. But that changed when Fenghuang's heart turned dark, and then they became enemies and weren't friends anymore. Fenghuang desired to kill Shifu (who had succeeded Oogway as the master of the Jade Palace) and replace him.

Po

Fenghuang first met Po when she saved him from falling to his death, and it was from him that she learned of Oogway's passing. When he tried to stop her, she tried to seduce him, presumably desiring him to be her apprentice, and promised him power, glory, and to teach him advanced kung fu techniques.

Alas, Po proved to be too virtuous of a warrior to fall for Fenghuang's manipulative seduction and tricked her to imprison her. Fenghuang declared she would escape have vengeance upon the panda as she was taken to Chorh-Gom Prison.
