The Staff of Wisdom is an item with mystical abilities in harnessing chi energy, which can then be used to create powerful attacks as well as open portals to other realms. The abilities will only work for the Staff's current owner; to pass ownership, the Staff must be willingly given by its current owner.[2]

The Staff was first presented to Po by Oogway in the Spirit Realm during Kung Fu Panda 3 after Kai's defeat, to which Po then used the Staff to return back to the mortal realm. It was later featured in Kung Fu Panda 4, where the Chameleon obtained the Staff and used it to summon Po's past enemies (including Tai Lung, Shen, and Kai) and steal their chi which harnessed their kung fu abilities.

Description[]

Appearance[]

The Staff has a circularly curved head with the addition of a small stone that floats in close proximity to the staff, visually forming the yin yang symbol. Its length is almost as long as Oogway himself. Its colors are primarily golden, jade, and light green colors, which seem to change depending on the presence of local chi energy. For example, if the Spirit Realm is primarily a jade, darkish green color (as seen in the beginning of Kung Fu Panda 3, when Kai is present and powerful), the Staff appears golden. If the Realm is golden (seen at the end of the film, when Kai is defeated and Oogway is the dominant source of chi), the Staff is a yellowish, light jade color. When Po channels his chi, the Staff becomes bright golden.[1]

Abilities[]

The Staff has the ability to harness chi energy, which then has multiple uses. The most notable is the ability to create an entryway portal to the opposite realm of where it is used. In other words, if the Staff is used in the Spirit Realm, it will open up a portal to the mortal realm (as seen when Po used it in Kung Fu Panda 3); if the Staff is used in the mortal realm, it will open a portal to the Spirit Realm (seen when the Chameleon used it in Kung Fu Panda 4). The harnessed chi can also be used to create a powerful projectile attack, which both Po and Zhen use in Kung Fu Panda 4.

However, the Staff's abilities can only be activated and used by its current owner. To pass along ownership, the Staff must be willingly given by its current owner[2] to the desired other person, to which a verbal confirmation and a physical gesture of giving the Staff to the person have been shown to suffice.

Oogway with the staff

Oogway wielded the staff when Kai attacked him in search of revenge, and it was presumably contained within the jade medallion that Kai created after capturing Oogway's chi.

It later re-materialized along with Oogway after Kai's defeat, and Oogway used it as a paddle as he and Po shared a short boat voyage in the Spirit Realm. Afterwards, he gave the staff to Po to keep, and assured him that he would be fine as he "had an even bigger one". Po then used it to channel his chi and return to the mortal realm, where the staff-and Po's newfound prowess-were both awe-inspiring and somewhat humiliating to Shifu, who then asked Po to teach him the full power of chi.
