Young Shen was in line to rule Gongmen City, but he wanted more. I foretold that someone would stand in his way—a panda. But I never could have foretold what came next...
—The Soothsayer to Po before the flashback, Kung Fu Panda 2

The massacre of the pandas was the unexpected, unforeseen raid on the panda village, led by Lord Shen and his wolf followers. Even though some Pandas fought back, it ultimately ended in the destruction of the village and the extermination of almost all its inhabitants. Only a few had managed to escape and survive the attack.[1]

Summary[]

Background[]

SoothsayerPrologue

The Soothsayer foretelling the warrior of black and white prophecy to Shen's parents

More than three decades ago, there was once a thriving village of pandas just on the outskirts of Gongmen City. There resided Li Shan, his wife and their infant son, Lotus, who all lived in blissful harmony along with the other pandas in the village.

Lord Shen, son of the peacock rulers of Gongmen City, sought to weaponize his family's invention of fireworks to conquer all of China. His concerned parents consulted a soothsayer who foresaw that if Shen continued his dark pursuits, he would be defeated by "a warrior of black and white". Shen, having overheard about the prophecy, presumed it meant one of the pandas living in the nearby village. Not wanting to allow anything or anyone to interfere with his plans, Shen led his personal army of wolf mercenaries to exterminate this potential threat relentlessly.[1]

Massacre[]

Get them all!
—Lord Shen ordering his wolves to exterminate the pandas, Kung Fu Panda 2

Upon arrival at the village, Shen had his wolves set fire to all the houses and pursue the pandas attempting to flee the carnage. During the massacre, at Shen's command, Boss Wolf and another wolf leaped at the young Lotus watching the chaos in terror. Li Shan bravely stepped in front of him and struck the wolves with his rake as Shen looked on in astonishment. Boss Wolf's left eye was permanently blinded from the blow. Li then ordered his wife to flee the village with their son while he did what he could to hold them back. She complied with him, grabbing Lotus and running as fast as she could. Immediately after she picked him up, Lotus accidentally dropped his doll, which ended up buried underneath a pile of burnt wood for thirty years.

After the initial attack on the village, Shen and the wolves scoured the surrounding forests for any remaining pandas. Realizing that she couldn't outrun them for long, Mrs. Shan hid Lotus in a crate full of radishes on a shipping boat and then led Shen and the wolves away from him, thus sacrificing herself so that her son could survive.[1]

Aftermath[]

Lord Shen banished from the city

Shen's parents exiling their son for his actions

When the massacre was complete, Shen returned home, expecting his parents to praise him for his initiative, only to find that they were horrified and disgusted by the atrocity their son had committed. In response to his unforgivable crime, they stripped him of his birthright and banished him from the city for all eternity. Feeling no remorse for his actions and believing his parents had betrayed him, Shen swore that he would someday return, take back the city and conquer all of China before leaving with his wolf army. Despite what he had done, Shen's parents still loved their only child, and they died of grief not long afterward. Rulership of Gongmen then fell to the Kung Fu Council, who protected the city up until Shen's return twenty years later. Despite Shen's exile for his actions, the damage of the massacre had already been done. The scale of Shen's genocide was of such magnitude that the peacock firmly believed that there were "no more pandas" even thirty years after the raid had taken place.

After the massacre, a small number of pandas fled and hid in a secret valley, along with Lotus's long lost father. Lotus himself, on the other hand, traveled to the Valley of Peace in the radish crate his mother hid him in. Upon arrival, he was found and adopted by Mr. Ping, who renamed him Po and raised him to work in his noodle-shop. Eventually, he rose up to become the legendary Dragon Warrior and avenged his people's deaths at Shen's hands.[1]
